Renewal, Reflection and Focus Through Trauma Sensitive Yoga
with Michell Spitko and Stephanie Van Deusen
All Levels - This class is geared toward caretakers, yoga teachers and survivors alike who want to learn more about the interface between yoga and trauma.

In this discussion-lecture-experiential workshop, we will look at trauma through a sensorimotor vantage point, highlighting how a survivor's body carries both the injury, or the "Unspoken Voice" of trauma, as well as the mechanism for healing.

Our session will examine how trauma-informed yoga and mindfulness-based interventions can help survivors find and tolerate their stories as well as discover hidden resources by settling into their body and connecting to breath and sensation. We will review the unique uses of various breathing exercises and yoga poses for specific symptoms of PTSD/trauma.

Participants will have an opportunity to try on several of these mindful exercises, reflect on their own story and learn how to mindful yoga practice can create a sense of self-empowerment and renewal.

Michelle Spitko, BA, LMT, RYT,  is a holistic bodyworker in practice 22 years. She studied both Engineering and Somatic Therapies for her B.A. She is certified in the Hakomi Method in trauma sensitive bodywork, and is 400-hour yoga certified with a focus in therapeutics.  Michelle is in private practice at www.sunrisebodyworks.net

Love Your Selfie: No Edits
with Julie Mathers
All Levels
The class will highlight how through the practice of yoga a person can communicate and be in conversation with their bodies. The human body speaks to us everyday all day and the goal of the class is to tune up the "body station", listen to the song that it plays and respond accordingly and lovingly. The yoga mat is a great place to start that conversation and relationship. Step on your yoga mat, love the part of you that you edit the most and offer attention to that place with the intention of loving your selfie: NO EDITS! You are enough and bring value just by breathing in and out on your mat. Class is taught in a Baptiste style flow.

Julie Mathers is co-owner of Evolution Power Yoga.  Julie by trade is a school teacher with an M.A. in early childhood education. After being diagnosed with anorexia nervosa her junior year in college, Julie battled the illness for thirteen years. She created a series of events, "Love Your Selfie: No Edits," held at EPY, to empower and educate people regarding who they really are –perfectly imperfect at the core. Love Your Selfie is built on the core belief: There is nothing to edit, nothing to fix, just to generate love for our selfies. Julie and her husband Jeremy are the proud parents of three children and live in Millersville

Time: 3:30 - 5:00 pm
Hatha Yoga for 50+
with Maria van der Meij & John Protopapas
All Levels
Hatha yoga for 50+ primarily focuses on improving the body’s range of motion through physical stretching and mindful breathing to encourage the body’s natural ability to heal. The gentle restorative focus of this hatha yoga practice and the meditative element of Classical Sitar music will lead you to that quiet place of peace and joy. Along with the Sitar, John will bring a few other traditional Indian musical instruments to guide the class. This practice is appropriate for the mature body, or any one who would like a contemplative yoga experience.

Maria van der Meij began her yoga practice in 1976 at Temple University. In 1992 she attended the Himalayan Institutes’ Hatha Yoga Teacher Training. Looking to provide a peaceful environment to share her practice with others, she opened the first yoga studio in Lancaster City in 1998. Her yoga program expanded in 2007 when it was approved by Yoga Alliance as a RYS (Registered Yoga School) for 200-hour and 500-hour programs, and in 2010, she moved the studio to East Orange Street in Historic Downtown Lancaster and named it Yoga on Orange.

Maria strives to create a safe place at Yoga on Orange to let go of preconceived ideas of what you should be and practice a safe, gentle, supportive yoga. She believes that yoga is for anyone who wants to feel good in his or her body – no matter age, experience, or body type.

John Protopapas has been developing ideas about music, self expression, and improvisation for many years. In Classical Indian Music he finds the culmination and fruition of all these ideas. This musical system is not only spiritual in nature, but is a complete musical system where through rigorous training, one acquires the necessary skills to go deep into one’s creativity, touching on very deep elements of our human nature. It not only leads the musician and listeners into deep states of contemplation, but has the ability to touch on the most refined elements of sound and aesthetics.

John has continued his sitar studies with many masters over the past 23 years and teaches World Music at York College, PA and teaches sitar, tabla and yoga privately. He regularly performs and gives lecture demonstrations at local colleges. Ultimately, music is a blessing that comes through us and not from us. Classical Indian music when seriously listened to has the ability to give us a glimpse of that which we are all seeking in so many millions of ways: a gentle taste of the Beloved.
